TECHNOLOGY
Investment
in Information Technology
The
investment in information technology by boards of trustees offers
scope for innovation in teaching. Parents, students and
teachers value the use of information technology, and teachers agree
that there is considerable educational benefit to be gained from IT.
The challenge that lies ahead is the need for schools to embrace a
formal planning process to ensure that IT becomes an integrated part
of curriculum delivery, and ultimately contributes to student
learning outcomes.

Extracts
from Education Gazette vol 75 # 4, 18th March 1996
Information
technology challenges the capabilities of students and shifts the
emphasis away from simply giving and receiving information.
Instead students are encouraged to access relevant information and
learn how to solve problems, ask questions, think critically and
communicate ideas. Students can also connect with learning
environments where their own ethnic and language characteristics are
more dominant. Interactive media allows students to see and
operate on phenomena represented in graphics, pictures, video and
sounds. They are thus able to extend their knowledge
boundaries and increase their understanding.
INFORMATION
& COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT)
Information
Technology can successfully
- bridge
the gap between in-school and our-of-school learning;
- encourage
the development of higher order skills and knowledge;
- increase
student control and motivation by providing students with the
opportunity to be directly involved in the decision making
process;
- encourage
students to strategic approaches to problem and to follow these
strategies through.
