5. STUDENT
ACTIVITIES:
Folk Dancing – by Michael Lay Room 19, Yr. 4
“It was 24 August 1999. Six children from each of the Year 3 and 4
rooms had been specially chosen to represent Sunnynook School. First we had to go to the hall to meet Mrs
Smith. By that time, we had our
costumes on, the costumes were silk capes (the boys wore them) and there were
also bird costumes (the girls wore them).
Next Mrs Smith took a photo of us and we got onto the bus. It was a long time before we got to the ASB
Stadium. When we got out of the bus, it
was cold and Tristan’s pants caught on a car and the alarm went off! Finally we got inside the stadium. We had to take off our shoes. When we went in, there were old people in
funny costumes. First we danced to
Carnavalito then The Train and so on.
They announced the winner of the costumes, they said “SUNNYNOOK SCHOOL”. It was a big surprise. We did about 5 to 8 dances before we had a
little snack. Finally we had a break.
And a lady took a photo of us. We had a
very fun and tiring day.”

As there were fifty competitors in each race,
Sunnynook students, especially girls, did exceedingly well. Special thanks to Mrs McDonald for coaching,
Mr Davey and Mrs Bourne for setting up the course.
Netball:
No surprise the “A” Netball team won the 1st Grade
Competition. Played 20, won 20. Goals for 491, goals against, 92, an average
